learning about making money online imageSo much to learn…

Where should I start?

There are so many different components involved in setting up an online business. Sometimes it can seem like I am running around in circles. I don’t know about you but there is so much information put in front of me every day, it is hard to choose what to focus on.

I subscribe to a lot of marketer’s email lists because I want to see how they do things. It is a great way to learn, I think. The problem is, almost every day I am presented with offers from all sides. This expert says do this, another says do that. Pretty soon the information overload starts to kick in.

There is a saying that goes something like this…when you present somebody with several choices they very often choose not to choose any of them.

I think it is important to understand why I am on all of these lists. Is it so I can chase every new tactic that comes along? No. I am on these list to learn about marketing. It is a real time study of how successful marketers make their living. Nothing more.

Sometimes I do buy. Quite often, in fact. Why? Because, if an offer seems to answer a question I have, or could potentially solve a problem I am facing, why not? There is nothing wrong with trying out different things. The important thing for me to remember though, is that whatever I do buy needs to fit in with my overall strategy. If not, then it will just be a distraction for me, taking me away from my chosen course of action.

Sometimes what I buy does what is promised; it solves a problem I have, or answers a question. Sometimes it does not. But that is alright. At least I know what not to do in the future. Everything is education in this game. I am finding out what works and what doesn’t quite quickly.

There are many important things to focus on when trying to earn money online. Things like:

  • website (or blog) design
  • building an email list
  • learning how to use social media to build a brand
  • learning how to get visitors
  • learning what is permitted by the search engines
  • learning what is not permitted by the search engines
  • how to write good copy and content
  • learning how to sell without spamming
  • understanding buyer psychology
  • networking with others
  • product creation
  • how affiliate marketing works

The list is long. Is there one thing that is more important than all of the others? I don’t think so. I think that if one piece of the ‘system’ is missing, the whole thing will not work, or not as well as it could.

For me, the most important thing to learn is what I need to learn about. I know this sounds like some kind of Buddhist riddle or something (a koan as they are called) but let me explain. If I don’t know what I need to know, how can I learn what I need to learn. Damn, that is worse than the previous sentence.

In essence, what I am trying to get across is, I need to watch what others do, and try to replicate it. Let’s face it, if the experts are doing it then it must work. Why would a successful marketer waste their time on something that doesn’t work?

Does this mean that if two marketers do things differently, one is right and the other is wrong? Not at all. Why can’t they both be right? I can use parts of both methods, and adapt them to fit my own. Absorb what is useful, discard what is not.

What is the most important thing to learn? Understanding that there are several ways to reach the same destination, and choosing one. If the road becomes blocked, take a detour.

Til next time, take care.
